Somnath temple is a symbol of our national pride, cultural heritage and faith: Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai
Raipur,Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai on Monday flagged off a special train from Raipur railway station, marking the launch of the Somnath Swabhiman Sanskritik Yatra. More than 1,000 eminent personalities, Padma Shri awardees, state and national award-winning artists and litterateurs departed for Somnath Jyotirlinga as part of the pilgrimage.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister described Somnath temple as a symbol of national pride, cultural heritage and faith. He said the temple had been destroyed by invaders several times but was rebuilt on every occasion, reflecting the unwavering faith of the people.
Calling it a proud moment for Chhattisgarh, Shri Sai said more than 1,000 devotees from across the state are undertaking the pilgrimage. The Somnath Swabhiman Parv is being observed across the country from January 11, 2026 to January 11, 2027 as a national commemoration programme under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, and that the yatra forms part of the celebrations.
Recalling the contribution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Chief Minister said he had resolved to rebuild the Somnath temple after Independence as a symbol of national unity and cultural resurgence. He added that the reconstructed temple was inaugurated by India’s first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad, 75 years ago.
Shri Sai said it is a matter of pride that Padma Shri awardees, artists and litterateurs from Chhattisgarh are carrying sacred soil collected from Shiva temples of religious, historical and archaeological significance in their respective regions, along with water from the state’s holy rivers, to offer at Somnath. Describing the yatra as a living example of India’s cultural unity, he prayed for the prosperity, happiness and well-being of Chhattisgarh.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister also interacted with the pilgrims, presented them ‘angavastrams’ and wished them a safe and successful journey.
Addressing the gathering, Culture Minister Shri Rajesh Agrawal said the pilgrimage will provide devotees an opportunity to experience not only spiritual fulfilment but also India’s rich cultural traditions and national heritage.
Skill Development Minister Shri Guru Khushwant Saheb, MLAs Shri Dharamlal Kaushik, Shri Anuj Sharma, Shri Indrakumar Sahu, Shri Domanlal Korsewada and Shri Sampat Agrawal, Film Development Corporation Chairperson Sushri Mona Sen, public representatives and senior officials were present on the occasion.
